A380 Engine disintegration

Recommended Posts

I wonder if this is the same as the Qantas A380 mishap a few years back? Looks to me like a complete failure of the front of the engine assembly, with the turbine blades literally falling off with an "infinite" amount of energy, taking the cowl with them in multiple pieces, damaging the engine nacelle and taking the front off the pylon.... Not good especially with all the '380's in service ATM...

Not good when the engines are "meant" to take this;

Not due blade loss from hub, the whole fan sheared away, look Mum, NO hub!!

Also, for info, not the Rolls Royce Trent 900, Air France chose the Engine Alliance engine which apparently has a core from one engine manufacturer and a fan from another one.

Draw your own conclusions if this had any bearing.

So it's a bode job by Air France xD a bit like trying to stick a prop collet adapter to an IC engine ;)

No, Air France don't make engines. Until the cause is actually known, I prefer to not even speculate.

This was a very unusual form of failure and I suspect a lot of manhours are going at the problem at the moment. AFAIK a couple of RB211's did similar but that must have been 1970's

Neither donor engine for the components then redesigned to fit together is new, and the fleet of EA engines has done huge hours.

If you want rumour and conjecture and a measure of knowledge then PPRuNe (sic) is likely on it!

RR Trent had a fan blade shed which is a much more frequent occurrence.

Still nothing about a report into the cause of the failure...

In other news did anyone hear about the Italian EF2000 that went it during an airshow a month or so ago, the Spanish EF2000 that went in with no cause during straight and level flight whilst in formation, and then a week later another Spanish jet, an F/A - 18E/F that went it during takeoff? All three pilots were killed and they all made no attempt to eject from the aircraft...

Lots of confusion in the media over this. Some reports it was an A380.

It was flight 1380 (might explain it!), listed as a 737-700 with CFM engines.

Reports emerging of sheared blades, if true NOT a hub failure per se.

Typical brain dead idiot things appearing, like the male passenger with mask held by hand over mouth only while he selfies and shows cabin on phone. More important to film it than to make himself safe. 9_9

Agreed the media has stretched it out of proportion! The blade loss is similar to the quantas ‘380 a while ago? Only difference being the complete difference of engine!

Seemingly the women that was sucked part way out of the broken window has died?
