1/4 scale AVRO Type D

Recommended Posts

Here we go again! Yet another nightmare. A fully rigged biplane with dozens of turnbuckles, spoked wheels and time consuming to rig!

Based on the dreadful kit from Arizona Model Aircrafters I started this model a couple of months ago and have reached the stage where I don't know what to do next.

Anything I do now relies on something being completed before the one I've just thought of! You've all been there I know :?

Here's a few pix. No captions needed, methinks.

Any questions?

Plenty done over the "holiday" to reach the final stage of the build. That is radio link up to the on-board glow system. The rigging is complete except for a couple of braces back to the fuselage from midpoint on the wings trailing edges.

I must apologise to those I promised to advise the maiden flight but it was all a spur-of-the-moment enterprise.

A phone call from Hastings reported the conditions ideal so I just had to do it!

The guy holding the video camera screwed up somewhat (!) but one of the members wives had her camera with her and shot some great stills.

Anyway, all went well in the end and I've uploaded the video onto You-Tube for laughs. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QSBR3eGAAtA

Here's a few of Heather's stills (in reverse order, as usual!!!!!)

:D Thanks for that video Don.

Did you miss the fabulous sound of that engine? Well worth the £25 you told us you paid for it!?

I've set one of the flight pics on my desktop, so thanks to Heather from me too.

Hope to see you at OW soon.

TTFn Oily..

( I'm getting on with my Tomboy! )

Those of us who attended the Old Warden Scale meeting last weekend had a great time. Mick Reeves and Richard Crapp were among the Good & the Great and Philip Kent said nice things about our Club. David Bishop had some time on the mic. and helped the public understand what was going on.

My day was somewhat marred by totalling the AVRO 'D' and I would like to thank those who scurried across the airfield to pick up the pieces.

Here's how it looked. No flowers, please - cash will suffice. :)

Thanks to all who sent condolences :D The engine appears to be OK, Pete. The prop broke in a way to indicate that the engine was turning on impact but there was such a lot of structure by way of struttery, skiddery and wirewok in front that it sort of cushioned the worst if it.

There was no sign of earth or grass anywhere near the engine and it felt OK when I turned it over gently so, fingers crossed, a bench test will show if a shock loading has affected it.

The sum total is that the remains were collected by the bin men this morning as part of the Great Landfill of East Sussex.

Now for my next trick...
