  1. One of the best things to see on Wednesday! I'd be careful with hobbyking extension leads though I've had lots of problems with them so now don't use them. The best ones are from T9 they are twisted servo leads. Brilliant and strong and yet fairly cheap to buy.

I think I'm going to have to wait till Christmas now before I buy my next plane.

Due to some reasons I won't be getting the Tucano but I will say it'll be as quick but yet much much cheaper!

Are you going up on Sunday?

  2. Right thanks Dave lots of food for thought. So 710 is too many watts I gather!

I was hoping to fly it at CAMFC but then move it to Sevenoaks for the speed demon.

I went for the low KV in the hope that it would reduce noise?

I didn't really plan on flying at the speed of sound all the time, just flying around at a decent speed but well below triple figures and then occasionally go from one far side of the field to the other at full chat.

I was hovering between 2200mah and 1300mah but decided one 1300mah for weight.

Are there any motors you can suggest that run on 3s or 4s that would give me the turn of speed I want, but meets noise regulations and is flyable at CAMFC?

What about this? Runs on a smaller prop has less power and has a much higher KV? https://www.overlander.co.uk/bm400-2845-09-2100kv-brushless-inrunner-rc-motor.html

Is an inrunner or outrunner better?

    Thanks Again,

It's also worth saying I don't want a full time ICBM! I was hoping for a generally fast plane (like equaliser plyon racer) but has a big turn of speed on full throttle....

Although preferably if it runs on a 3S that would be best so I can just use my 2200mah....

  3. So I'm having trouble finding a motor for my radjet. I'm hoping someone can point me the right direction. I think it's time for a crazy plane so here I am, but I do genuinely mean ballistic missile fast!!!

I'm looking at the https://www.overlander.co.uk/tornado-thumper-v3-3542-05-1250kv-brushless-outrunner-rc-motor.html  for the plane. I plan to use a https://www.overlander.co.uk/speed-controllers-ubec/speed-controllers/overlander-xp2-speed-controllers/overlander-xp2-60a-sbec-brushless-speed-controller-esc.html for the ESC and a 4s 1300mah LiPo.

    Now for the maths.

1lb is 450g give or take and with my uprated bits and bobs I'm thinking 500g flying weight so for simplicity's sake that's a plane that weighs 1lb

    The rule I've always employed is;

    Watts/lb

    30 to 50 for ROG

40 to 60 for sport aerobatics

70 to 100 for 'good' aerobatics and EDF jets

180 to 300 for some serious speed

350+ for the RAF to be called about a ground to air missile heading to heathrow coming from a field in Croydon.

The motor I have picked out will run on a 4s with a 9x5 prop and should deliver 710 watts.

Now I want something the will reach triple figures and keep on going.

To put this in perspective my wot 4 foam e delivers 303 watts and it weighs 2.4lb. That motor punches it skyward at a fairly decent rate. The radjet weighs under half that and the motor gives me over twice the power.

The question I have is; will 710 watts rip the plane apart?

Needless to say I have modded the plane greatly with many carbon rods, carbon strips, glass tape and double tape on the hinges! And I have seen radjets on youtube do this kind of speed so I know its possible!

Any input would be greatly appreciated guys!

P.S. Can anyone recommend and servos? They should be 9g size. Will these be up to it? https://wheelspinmodels.co.uk/i/109052/

  4. Thanks Dave. They haven't had easy lives. They are only 25c yet they've powered edf's and hotliners!

For £10 a pop from hobbyking I think tomorrow is the last time I will trust them in a decent plane. From then they'll be consigned to shockies and smaller stuff.

  5. Yeah sorry Trev I meant it as in they are only experimenting and interested in 4 volt batteries!xD

That said that's a one cell lipo so perhaps the ultra micros could use them but that said I don't see why they can't put the cells together as it's just a polymer coating to protect the electrode. Maybe in a few years time they might appear in hobbyking!

They would however last much longer that regular lithium packs and maybe the technology could be used for large applications e.g. car batteries? Wait and see I think :D

  6. I did look into getting a turbine turboprop but let's say that for the price you could probably get a second hand Ford Fiesta:D

Thanks so much as usual Dave I really honestly don't know what I'd do without you!

I think that's decided I'll go for nitro and I need to look into noise because if I were to get the 2 stroke I'd want it screaming and that may be over the limit. Bearing in mind though that my budget really is being stretchedxD

Are there any differences in setup/running between 2 and 4 stroke?

    OS Gold

I think they're for display only! The was a gold cylinder head engine in rcm&e and he flew with that one. If you wanted a display engine I'd rather buy a huge radial for that price. That saud though you could sell it on ebay a few years from now and someone would give you much more than you paid for it....

Remember its only an .11 so the model would need to be quite small if you did want to strap  1 1/2 grand to a park flyer xD

  7. Surely you could set it up so that the rudder is synced with the throttle? That way regular up/down is thrust and left/right is differential thrust so in flight you just trim it and takeoff just use rudder as normal. All it would need is 2 Y-leads and a bit of mixing?

This might have been suggested already but I didn't really get all of that KISS stuffxD

  8. So I came back to the South after a long gliding holiday in the highlands of Scotland and found that everyone had broke out their wallets and purchased new models. it's been a while since I bought one and since I didn't have anything scale I thought this might be the right time to get something. I was looking for a warbird of some sort but didn't want the cliché of a spitfire or mustang, and I came across the Super Tucano made by Seagull, seen here at TJD http://www.tjdmodels.com/seagull-super-tucano-91-inc-rtrk-sea124-p-3773.html

All the models I've owned have only ever been up to a .46 size 2 stroke so I am plunging into the unknown with the recommended 91-100 2 stroke / 100-125 4 stroke. Several Tucano's have flown using a DLE-20 and others have flown with the ASP 1.20FS 4 stroke. The ASP 1.20 2 stroke is half the price of its 4 stroke counterpart but I really wanted a 4 stroke for realism. I know nothing about these large (for me) powerplants so thought I'd seek advice from my fellow more experienced modellers.

Could anyone point me in the right direction for choosing the engine? I like the idea of petrol power but is it much simpler or cheaper to get nitro? Are there any other engines I should consider? Will I find it easier to run a 2 stroke as opposed to a 4 with my limited experience? I want to cut as little of the tight cowl as possible so wondered if nitro engines need more cooling than petrol or 4 strokes need more cooling than 2 strokes?

The kit includes a set of mechanical retracts but would it be better to upgrade to a set of electrical retracts such as E-Flites product?

I also wondered if I would need to join a club with a longer strip (Sevenoaks/Caterham) as I do know that to land a trike you need a tad more space and with what I've seen on youtube the Tucano is pretty fast and wondered if our strip is long enough to take it?

Any other advice is also appreciated as this is also the first time I've dealt with retracts, flaps and a ARTF that is a bit more complex than a cougar xD

    Thanks guys,

    B;)

  9. I need some more pro synth 2000 but don't want the usual 4 gallons due to budgetxD

I wondered if anyone had a gallon or two that they would be interested in selling to me for the full brand new price?

    ;)

  10. Any metal can potentially block signal from your tx to your rx but I wouldn't have thought there would be any effects on the wiring on flight controller. As with the accelerometer I couldn't say:D As long as your rx antennas are far enough away you should be in buisness....

  11. I replace the ones with bigger servos every year! In my hype for example I run big HS645MG servos that draw a ton of power so the batteries are constantly drained and re charged, so I don't risk them longer than a year or two at the most, and if it has been sitting for a year or so I also still bin it or keep it to power something non flight related...

    B :)

  12. Hiya,

If I 100% charged a regular 6V rx pack but then didn't fly the plane for some reason, do I need to discharge it that day and then charge it agin next week or can I keep it like a lipo IE at full charge for a few weeks?

    B :)
