  1. Here is an example of what I am talking about. I think it's great for an FPV pilot, but for a LOS fixed wing pilot (who likes to fly inverted circuits a few feet above the ground), it isn't very nice!

  2.  I settled on the vinyl for the same reason Dave. The fit is a bit crap, but the only other option was from a company in Canada, and their designs made my eyes crazy!

Hydrodipping is interesting, and would create a much better finish, but it's a bit too much hassle IMO.

By mainstream I was sort of referring to the usual Spektrum, Futaba and Hitec stuff, although as you say Frsky is now a huge company, but mainly in the drone world.

  3. Just thought that I'd share a few pictures of my tired but faithful X9D, in the hope that others may be tempted to join this exclusive club of radio connoisseurs, and step away from "mainstream" radios.

    Currently, @Emay @shanemarsh28 @Bravedan @Trevor @Gerard and of course @Pilot Ben all have a TARANIS transmitter.

Oh, and did I mention that all of them (including a 12 channel tx with a large colour screen), are all below £480?

The equivalent Spektrum iX12 (with fewer features I should point out), is over £200 more expensive! For that you could buy the new Wot 4 foam-e, one of the fantastic TARANIS receivers and some LiPo batteries and still have cash left over for the pub!

More details on the TARANIS system can be found from the main uk distributor here - https://www.t9hobbysport.com/rc-gear/frsky-taranis-transmitter

BTW, if anyone would like to purchase an X9D model, there are two available for purchase. Please PM me for more details if you are interested.

    B ;)

P.S. My X9D is wearing a vinyl wrap, as a way to freshen it up a bit!

  4. Just finished watching a great documentary about the cold war and Britain's Jet age, and I thought some of you might be interested.

AFAIK, it airs every night on BBC 2 from 9 until 10. The first episode aired tonight, and can be seen on catch up here -  https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b03hhm6z

Let me know what you think!

P.S. There was also a documentary from 8 until 9 tonight (7.10.2018) on Rolls Royce, although I can't seem to find what channel it was on!

  5. Only thing to be aware of with the spray aerosol paints, is that depending on the make/type/etc, they are quite prone to splitting. This isn't a problem once on the model, however when manipulating the cowling around the engine (cylinder head, carb, muffler, etc) the cowling will flex slightly but the pain won't.

Best solution really is to just take it slow, as "touching up" tends to leave slightly different shade marks and lines on the cowling. That said, I don't think you'll have a problem with this type of aircraft. I think that it is usually the tighter fitting ones such as the cowlings on aerobatic/WWII fighters that cause the problems.

I have to say that the DVII does look particularly good, and the price only makes it sweeter!

  6. Lovely bit of work Mike; You sure have been busy!

Once confident with the larger "Stik" you should be able to use it at Fickleshole, I would have thought. It's very similar to a Wot 4, and you know how well those things slow up!

Anyway, I'm off to go and try get some models airworthy for tomorrow. Hope to see you somewhere at some point,

  7. This trespassing really isn't good. Problem is, from my experience shooting on my farm permissions, if the police are called all they will do is say that it is a civil dispute/problem and that they won't get involved.

Time to get the barbed wire and landmines out!

Although, on the subject, there are numerous sections behind the airsoft setup to the right of the oak tree that contain barbed wire. Perhaps the gap(s) could be blocked by the installation of some more?

  8. Looking really good Mike! Do you think it will make it to the field tomorrow?

Touching on 4-MAX, I can thoroughly agree with you about the service that George provides. For those that have seen my Cougar, the entire £65 setup was purchased from 4-MAX after some advice and discussion with George about the optimum sized prop for my model. The quality (and performance) of both motor, ESC and all the bits in between, are second to none for the price point.

With regards to the weight; I have found that manufacturers are usually quite ambitious with weight on their models, and this could be for a number of reasons. For example, since your SE5A is a kit build, some of the extra weight could comprise of things as minute as how much glue you used, the modifications you made, or even the covering (Oracover is on the weighty side remember). These things could be especially true since Ripmax, as one of our favourite far-eastern suppliers, will most likely have used the least amount of glue and the lightest covering on their versions. However, I too don't quite see how your model could be 1.2lb heavier than the quoted weight. One last thought is that Ripmax may have purposely under-quoted, to save people (like myself) from chucking in a bigger-than-recommended lumpy 4-Stroke (based on the famous modellers guesstimation), putting the model over the viable flying weight. We'll just have to see how it flies! After all, as they say, the proof is in the pudding.

    Thoughts?

  9. Agreed. I read somewhere (official) that the name Tempest had been chosen as the main backers wanted to "resurrect" the original name. It also said that they thought that it would get a better response from the public.

Quite honestly it is a huge undertaking, and if we're going to design one of the first 6th gen fighters, I'm not entirely sure that an untested and rejected 90's design is the best place to start. I have also just read that we are trying to get Sweden on board too.

I'm not able to post any pictures as the forum seems to be glitching out again, but from the majority of photos, is it just me that sees the similarity to the F-22?

  10. For those that missed it this week -

    https://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/uk-unveils-first-model-of-new-raf-fighter-jet-the-tempest-a3888501.html

Seems like the RAF has finally got moving; with the Tonkas being phased out from Marham next year, the first four F-35Bs having arrived in the UK recently and now the Tempest being announced at Farnborough.

Based on experience from the F-35 however, 17 years from cardboard mock-up to remotely operated operational fighter aircraft does seem a little ambitious I think, especially with the previous reliability of the MODs funding.  It's very likely that the unveiling of the new aircraft was also a political move also, with this theory being backed up by the rather bold statement that the RAF would be the first air force to have remotely piloted combat aircraft...

BTW, despite looking new, the airframe is actually from the 90s and was in fact put aside by the MOD in favour of the F-35Bs from LM and the US. After seeing the much-higher-than-quoted cost of the F-35 however, Britain, France, Germany and Japan (potential customers of the aircraft) are setting about designing their own 6 generation fighter aircraft. However, due to BREXIT, the UK has been booted off of the Franko-German project so is going in alone with BAE on point.

Lets see how it all plans out in the next few years, and whether or not the Tempest will end up like the TSR-2...

    B ;)

  11. Hmmm I will have to take a closer look at those; perhaps over the coming winter. They all look really good, and the Tiggie especially could be a great build.....

  12. Do you mind me asking how long it took you to "build" Don?

I've been looking at one for a while so that I can finally use my surplus DX5, only I have heard that they are quite fiddly....

    B ;)

  13. The level of detail on the engine and prop assembly really is something else! I can honestly say Don that your modelling abilities seem limitless, and not to mention superb! I think the detailing and weathering on the rest of the model gives it a sublime finish; especially the front of the fuselage and landing gear!
