Hangar 9 P51D Blue Nose engine question...

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone

As some of you know I started building this plane last year back in Madrid, Spain as a long term project and soon I will be going back for few days so will carry on building it and hopefully finish it!

I want to fit a gas engine and had in mind DLE20 which seems to be a popular one for this model as I could see on the internet.

The problem I have is that I don't know whether I should put instead a DLE30...

The reason being is that price difference between the DLE20 and DLE30 is not much at all, and secondly and most important I think with the DLE 30 in the future I would be able to fit it in other larger models and make the most out of it.

I don't want to buy an engine that later I can't use if wanna fly larger models basically.

So here I guess I would have to consider two things if I decided to go for the DLE 30 :

1) power

2) weight

3) dimensions

I reckon having bit of extra power is not a bad thing ( correct me if I am wrong ) and weight issue ( difference between the two is 300g ) I am sure I can balance that.

Dimensions, DLE 30 being bit bigger not sure if it would fit inside the cowl...

Any suggestions?

Need to decide and order the engine so when I go back to Spain I can fitted and break in..

You should be able to re-use both the DLE 20 & DLE 30 again in other airframes! But if you want to fly larger models later on, then go for the DLE30! But also having said that DLE 30 maybe a bit to big for the cowling or just to much power!

Also keep in mind the bigger the engine the bigger the prop! You may fine you need to run a 3-bladed prop if using the DLE 30!

Its a hard one!

Avicraft has a nice 20cc Mintor engine in the shop, looks similar size to my Saito 125

I have just finish my H9 Mustang when I was looking at the engine I was looking at the Saito 20/30cc (4 stoke petrol), the 30 would of been too big IMO. Things that put me off 2 stroke petrol was they don't sound as nice as glow (unless there on a pipe or canister exhaust) and glow gives better power for the size over petrol.

Petrol is great, clean and cheap to run and buy (unless your going for a nice sounding Saito in which case it is very expensive) but I wanted power and a sweet sound to enhance my flying experience.

yeah...

I think I would go for DLE 20...at the end of the day is powerful enough for big planes 60-90 size.

getting the DLE 30 could be too much and risky.

If you know anybody selling a 20 second hand please let me know!

Thanks!

I will ask around, but not sure if I will get anywhere :?

You may as well buy one from new, they are around $200/230 + $20 P&P! So you could get one for around £160 or so, which would be bane new!

There are also other 20cc petrol engines out there as well, some costing a lot less than the DLE20! But I'm not sure how good they are!

Also a lot of them are fitted with Walbro carb as well these days.

Hi everybody

I think I have decided and will for for a DLE 30, I am sure I will manage to fit it and although plenty of power for this Mustang, will do a good job in the future with bigger aerobatic models.

Just a quick one to DLE users, Leon and Arun, etc...

How do you drill the holes in the prop ? - did you get a drill jig like this ?

Or are you using a prop adapter so no extra holes are needed ?

I would like to get a prop adapter but can't find it in the UK...

Let me know

Thanks!

I have a jig I bought from HobbyKing like the one below.

Not keen on the prop adaptor at all as the additional bolts through the prop is a good idea to eliminate single point of failure for larger props/more powerful engines IMHO, although happy to be proven wrong :)

Regarding putting the DLE30 in your Mustang, I think this is a good choice of engine to suit future models. You could probably use the throttle curve feature on your 8FG to limit the thrust the engine produces at full stick. Or or course just do it mechanically by not allowing the throttle arm to open fully.

Cheers.
