Fuel proofing tank bay

Hi All.

I've managed over tighten the bung in my fuel tank and it developed a leak into the surrounding bay.

Rookie mistake I know

As they say success is built on a series of mistakes so it got me thinking about fuel proofing.

Just wanted to get an idea what other people do , I read about some proofing on the web , was also thinking about somethink I could lay in the bay like nitrile matting ?

What are your top tips ?

You can get fuel proofing in either spray or in tins, or you can use epoxy resin thinned with meths and painted on.

I've used both, or neither.

Don't take this advice too seriously, but tongue in cheek...

 

The decision to do it depends on your assessment of whether the airframe will decay due to fuel absorbed over a longer period of time, or one too many enthusiastic low-passes/tree gap runs/unscheduled landings that end the model way before this

 

Really depends on the model and a realistic assessment of its expected life!

 

One other thing to consider in what you described - if you already have a leak and fuel has penetrated the wood, proofing on top of it is unlikely to help matters... it's too late for that wood sadly.

I've used Aero Kote from Deluxe Materials for fuel proofing. You can get it directly from them or from hobby shops.

As for how to get rid of the fuel that has penetrated the wood (if you can!), do search around on the web. I heard that talcum powder or corn flour might help to absorb some fuel/oil from the wood.
