Hello from a newbie

Newly joined and not sure what to do next. Do I come to a club night or to the field? I am 66 years of age and have just built an ARTF but no flying experience!!!!! Is there any body out there brave enough to take me on!? Looking forward to meeting up with you all. My dream is one day to build and fly a proper looking aeroplane but need to walk (very slowly and carefully) first so hope you can help me.

Hi Mike,

 

Welcome! Great choice of club, I'm sure we'll have you flying solo in no time! What radio/model have you purchased?

 

In addition to coming to the field, there are some other things you could do in parallel...

 

If you have a computer, a good investment is a simulator - it will help you get familiar with controls, reinforce lessons learned at the field and generally speed up the learning process. Phoenix is the one we tend to use although as with everything there are other choices.

Finally, this book has to be ordered from America, but I can't recommend the series highly enough and think they do an excellent job of helping you prepare for flying a model aircraft well:

Hi Mike, as Gary says, any Sunday afternoon from about 11:00, unless the weather is extremely bad, there is usually a group of us at the field at Fickleshole in Featherbed Lane, near Addington Golf Course. There are several people who can train and test fly your plane for you. The last Sunday of the month a gun club use the field until about 2:30. There are several trainees so you are not alone. We also recommend using a computer flight simulator such as PHOENIX to speed up the training, it can save a lot of time learning. Hope to see you soonz

Thanks everyone, and a special thanks to Rod for phoning me at home. Looking forward to meeting up with you all. It won't be this weekend though since am on mother-in-law duties! Have built a a Parkzone Stinson Reliant with Spektrum DX6i which I may have foolishly bought at the Southern Show in 2011. Never mind,I also bought a Phoenix simulator so will get it out the box and have a play.

This is the best move you have made! Spend a few hours+ a week on the Simulator and you will already have the upper hand, when you get to the field!
