Phoenix CAMFC - Fickleshole Site Build Thread
shanemarsh28 replied to shanemarsh28's topic in Simulators
Oh my! I completely forgot this was still here. I will try and find the files again for this and update the post. -
Im not sure, maybe they have some guidelines under FPV? They use them in America for that when the plane flies out of radiocontact to bring it back to the field and circle the strip. The only question i would have is, if something happened while on auto pilot and it crashed, Im not sure you would be covered as your technically not in control of the model. Something to question the BMFA i guess?? Shane

.. and some thought my little stabiliser was cheating! I might give it a go one day .. Shane

Ahh so your Neil. I remember you from Sunday. Sorry, it is sometimes a little hard to figure out who people are on forum usernames. I guess most of the stuff in our last posts you already knew about then!! Yes that was very unfortunate, the trainer plane had a structural wing failure on the flight just before you were about to take the sticks. It's death looked completely unrecoverable and with all the experience in the world, the plane was going down and it was ceremoniously laid to rest, (burnt) on Tuesday. (It went up with some enthusiasm & vigor too I must say! ) Occasional

Hi Blacknight, Having only very recently been taught to fly solo with one of the instructors I can with confidence say the training program at this club is very good. I had no experience at all with model aircraft and they went through all the steps and safety, teaching now only how to fly but also how to do it safely. Your best bet is to come up to the Fickleshole site on a Sunday, there are several experienced & dedicated instructors, several club trainer planes all equipped with buddy box systems and weather permitting, they will have you in the air in no time at all. The impor

Haha cool! Well mine arrived today and there's a couple of things that surprised me, its got an air bleed carb?! Not seen those for years! To be honest, i didn't think they made them like that anymore. Will be fun to setup. Also I was staggered to find a glow plug included with the engine!! Got no idea how there making any money on this. Very well spotted James. Many many thank you's Shane

Ordered. Arrives tomorrow morning! You can't really go wrong for £39 It's funnny you should say about thundertiger engines though James, I've had 4 of them in the past, all be it sized .12 or .15 for a string of racing grade model cars and boats. I don't ever recall having any problems with them at all either - there not the most powerful engines for their size but they do seem to start, on the nose every time. Shane
-
and so they are .. with free P+P aswell!!!! It's worth finding out a bit more about that engine, especially for that price! Sounds a bit like the illusive Irvine 53 - becoming rare now. Shane
-
I seem to remember something about this somewhere, I believe its called 'unloading'?? Apparently It's a good thing and it makes the engine run cooler at high RPM as the load on the engine is reduced - as long as you say the engine isn't over revved. I'm not sure though .. I may be talking complete rubbish!! Shane
-
I thought it was about time, as I look at buying an engine for a new plane I did a bit of research on where they came from and which one is best. After some digging I found that the main importer for the most common model 2/4 stroke engines into the UK is Just Engines who in turn gets supplied from a company called Sanye Precision Machinery based in China. Having some spent some time out on the field, many members and modelers have a preference on what type of engine is best - ASP, RCV, SC, Evolution, OS, Irvine etc, and I suppose for the most part it's based on experience, the type o

Its always best to have a slightly rich bottom end if you can, helps with cooling on a new, tight engine. Of course eventually you'll want to tune it up a bit but If it was me i would just very slowly start to lean out the low speed needle, that should stop.it backfiring. Do the spit test on the cylinder head while its running at idle, if the spit boils the engine is far too hot and should be shut down straight away and allowed to cool before re starting. If you can get it down to 3000rpm or less without overheating or stalling? You'll be good to go! Hope that helps, Shane Ps: I
-
It looks to me like its running very very rich on the bottom end and its flooding on idle giving you a lumpy tick over and eventually stalling completely also, backfires are nearly always the result of too much fuel entering the venturi. The high end sounds OK, although you could probably get a little bit more - If you haven't touched the low end at all, I'd wind in the low speed needle 1/8 (but no more than 1/4-1/2 unless the engine is well run in) of a turn and try again. That should go some way to solving your tick over issues. Shane
-
As some of you might know, at the field I've been having problems tuning the engine in the boomerang resulting in a series of deadstick landings, lack of power and a crash The high speed needle wouldn't fully shut off the fuel into the carb even when it was fully closed and as a result you could never properly tune the engine - always being far too rich or lean, often changing in mid flight!!! Today, the high speed needle has been replaced and it has completely resolved the problem in its entirity. More power at the top end, more revs, more reliable performace (much to the neighbours

Hey, It does sound like a good idea to have some training in the week, especially as were starting to get the lighter evenings but in practice It's probably not that practical. A lot of the instructors work during the week and as Arun says, there are limits (noise limits) at the airfield to consider, also available light. If you think that you might only have about 3 hours or less before it gets dark in the evening whereby the model is difficult to see, even for an experienced instructor - with a small break in between each flight that's only maybe 2-4 flights at the very best depending o

Just waiting now for some good weather! It does really take some skill and patience to build these images .. I'm finding that the software struggles really badly with anything that moves - the sky, trees - that bloody washing line!!! Also the sun came out half way though taking the initial photos - that didn't help with exposure at all .. It hard work this photography business As i did it as a test, I didn't stitch the pano at that higher resolution - takes such a long time - the highest I have is 4352x2176 @ 600dpi. So I have blown it up in Photoshop to your size and saved it a

Phoenix CAMFC - Fickleshole Site Build Thread

Updated to v0.3.2 Shane -
Well the progress continues ... Recently, I decided to learn how to put together panoramic photos and this is the second test - the first one of my dining room didn't quite go to plan - here's the results of my efforts! It took a made up tripod assembled out of some outdoor Arial tubing, a speaker stand and a mini tripod stolen from a set of lazer in my partners DJ rig and a cardboard cut out with all the angles needed on it - very crude, cost nothing but it appears to work! The camera was a run of the mill Sony DSC-WX5 in manual mode. I edited the photo initially in PTGui and the

Oh wow .. doesn't it look great! Loving the lights .. Well done Shane

Aww thank you Arun! Really appreciate that I think half the reason I've picked it up is exactly because all the tools are simple. A pain - but simple. I wouldn't be surprised if someone has managed to pull apart the creator program - with the top site developers using home built "creator" style programs that makes the job a lot easier. There is one thing that I'm looking into, I was reading that they use alpha masks so that planes actually get stuck & penetrate into the scenery 3D style, using lassoo tools to cut around branches etc - Pheonix creator can't do that so they must b
-
So do I .. It's going to be a huge amount of work but I think It's worth it! I have updated the flying site and created a build thread, just download it and extract it on top of the old version - I hope you will see a massive improvement! Shane

Hi Everyone, As you may know, recently we have re-started the project of creating a Fickleshole site on Phoenix RC Simulator. I thought it would be good to create a build thread to make new versions easier to find. The files are held on Google code as they are generally far too big to be uploaded directly to the forum. This thread will be updated with every new version that gets released. Previous, current and source code versions are also available by visiting the projects website created by Arun. I wish to encourage as much feedback as possible, so if you have any ideas as to how
-
Hey, my apologies for a late reply ... There are several problems with this version, the same issues which also plagued previous versions. I built this version as an example so that I could learn the tools and the program so when it comes to future releases I know what I'm doing. One of the main issues is that its optically wrong as you say and I believe that's due to two reasons. When the background was taken, the camera was far too close to the ground as if it's from a child's perspective so when Phoenix tries to simulate a model all the distances are completely out. The phoenix

Oh no! Sorry i missed it! I didn't see the post. I was on the simulator about then as well. Can we re-schedule for tomorrow evening?? Shane
-
Thank you for your post .. Its given me an idea and I believe i know how some of the effects your talking about are done, like the plane penetrating the tree before crashing. There is only one way that can be achieved. I would like to have a chat with you about it, see what's possible. I did have your number but for some reason i can't seem to find it. Can you PM it to me and ill call you. Shane
-
Cool - I'll be interested to know your opinion of my little bit of modeling. I'm overall quite pleased with it - It's not optically correct throughout the entire scene but I think its good enough for what most people would want it for. Shane
