  1. So, Update time......... BOTH 500's are still with me, still active.....NO spares added at all since the swashplate wore out on one in July.....been used at least one day a week for multiple flights on average since then....so much for HK 500's being sub-standard compared to the "genuine" TRex product, Eh? Last week I broke one canopy post. My fault. I have a "spare" complete kit (which cost not much more than a set of decent blades!) so just swapped for now. I'm flying them 6S, and up to now have been using my 450 batteries in pairs, which are only 2300mAh (Tipple), relatively sm

Last one of those I saw up there was a Sevenoaks member when several turned up one weekday afternoon. It was it's maiden.....it lasted about ten feet...............torque rolled in ............. West engined?

    FPV Anybody?

Yes, has to be the way to travel, tri or quad copters cry out for FPV. Looks a good setup basically. However, I do wish website writers/manufacturers would read their own blurb as simple errors and extravagant claims do tend to falsify and denigrate their own position:- "Six Rotor Configuration The 6-rotor design provides double the thrust while leaving a smaller footprint than our equivalent sized 4-rotor helicopters. Able to tolerate loss of 1 engine... and land." What they show doesn't seem to have a single "engine" fitted to it, and with contra rotating paired fixed pitch blad

  5. Like my now more than two years old design Delta "Spin"? (Which I have flown at Fickleshole a few times now, is also capable of vertical Take Off, flies quite happily in a lot of wind and has a range from very quick down to a near hover) The programming of the Tx isn't at all hard, for Futaba:- PMix1 is Master Rudder, Slave Throttle, and a Positive percentage PMix2 is Master Throttle, Slave Rudder, and a Negative percentage Then set up the motors to rotate opposite ways (so need matching normal and pusher props, which was about the hardest bit), then adjust the mix percentages to

    Cougar 2000

For the record, the firewall with engine fell off the front of my Cougar yesterday while in flight, breaking the hoops holding the undercart, folding it back, and breaking the silencer in the subsequent "arrival". At least I managed to get it flat so no wing or tail damage. Repaired overnight and silencer from Rod............all better now. BUT, a teeny bit of gnat's spit on a butt joint between shiny non-absorbent burnt laser cut ply and thin balsa is NOT adequate........
  9. BTW............throws..............absolute maxed out, rudder is near 90 degrees.
  10. After first paint..............This only took about an hour not including drying time. And the first combat one with it's little brother............
  11. If that is too tame then you built the wrong plane................. On those motors I use a 8x3.8 APC. Not in my case on a Firefly of course, as I'd not use that size motor, but roughly the same weight. Don't go too small diameter on a Fire Fly, as again you'll lose it's design brief manoeuvrability with insufficient prop wash available instantly when flying slowly. You'll end up as the Argie's Super Entendard against the Harriers. Somewhere down that thread is a link to a very good video on painting EPP and FireFlies in particular, you really do need to find it!! EPP takes mo
  12. Built the new carbon one, then on the second hover I ventured a little "power pump"..and that super powerful motor just removed most of the teeth off the main gear in nanoseconds.................. Now has a carbon loaded one on there............ That was several increasingly violent flights ago, and so far no further issues. Have not yet quite got it dialled in as well as the first one yet. Spot on blade tracking is proving a pain, might have to change the ball joints on the links, as the ones fitted are "one full turn only", and one turn, even on the "fine" side of the lever, is to

  14. Since you ask for Opinion................. The Firefly was designed by "Leadfeather" as a flat plate KF section very lightweight ultra manoeuvrable "Superfly with a rudder". Parkfly and Indoor. There is a massive thread and following on RCG so I'm surprised about the dearth of info bit Trevor, did Google not work for you? I know lots of them are American, but sometimes they still manage to make English understandable!! It's only 155 pages long currently. http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=943610 If you don't want to experience what it was designed for, a
  15. No I'm confused.......OK, so the Extra you list will take either a 1.20 Glow or a 20cc Gas, yes............? So, I buy a SC120 2 Stroke for it for £156 retail, and it comes with a silencer that'll meet noise regs. I buy a DLE 20cc for £219 retail, but will it's "silencer" actually silence to club rules? ........Dunno, but doubtful? So I add a silencer that'll make me club legal........at cost........ True you can find a petrol engine for sale at bargain prices, but then there is pretty furious discounting going on with either type. (SC120 AR is £125 at Servo Shop, first plac
  16. So, after lots and lots of use, eventually it started playing up a bit, traced to the swashplate getting too much play in it from wear on the bearing and housing. Keeping the "extreme budget" bit going, I bought a UK sourced but HK swashplate for under £12...and it's back flying well again. I think it's amusing that on a model criticised by many as weak, unreliable, and made from rubbish plastic, it's run for ages and ages totally bullet proof, then the first part to eventually wear out is the all metal bit!!! Anyway, it's so impressed me over the year of heavy use that HK500

    New Toy!

I REALLY hope it's better than the 1/5th one I got for the school club (from Avi via J Perkins)..........had all sorts of troubles with the drive train. The drive shaft couplings wore incredibly fast because they were not hardened. The front brakes didn't work because the design was awful and overloaded the servo with offset pull. And a very fast heavy petrol car is NOT something you want poor brakes on!!! The rear disc mountings were inadequate and kept loosening off or binding. I did a fair bit of work for them providing the factory with mods, etc, getting free improved bits

  21. Hi Arun, OK, so I'll add my 5p's worth and try to say why at the same time. Bottom Line first, I'd start with around 11x4, too, BTW. You have an engine with a manufacturer's range of suggested props, so what affects the choice you make? Well, it's basically what you need the engine to do. On a Fun Fly you are most of the time not going to need high flying speed, what you are going to need is fast response to throttle, a lot of instant airflow to use quickly over the surfaces to keep control when the plane is near or in the hover, so there is possibly little or no airflow from forward
  22. Any info on 2011 dates etc yet please? I note several of the shows are already actively advertising, and the already published 2011 Event databases are beginning to be fleshed out, for example:- http://www.modelflying.co.uk/events/ The SMAS website currently shows:- The Southern Model Air Show 2010 - The South of England's Premier Model Air Show, The Hop Farm, Kent 18th & 19th September 2010 255 days to go!
  23. Don, Are you SURE about that colour scheme????
